Owen’s little heart froze as he hurried to the window in fear that she might be in trouble. Someone forcibly dragged an eight-year-old girl to the forest adjacent to the family home.
Realizing he had to move fast, Owen reached for the nearest ammunition he could find—a marble and a rock—and grabbed a $3 slingshot his mother had bought him. He knew he could hit the kidnappers because he practiced hitting used orange cans with his slingshot.

The Michigan State Police managed to track down the alleged kidnapper. Although they withheld his name, they said he is a 17-year-old youth who will face adult charges.
“I think he saved his sister’s life or something really terrible from happening to her,” Lt. John Grimshaw said during a news conference, praising Owen for his “extraordinary” actions.
Grimshaw went on to describe the incident by saying that the kidnapper “came up from behind, grabbed her like you see in the movies – hand over mouth, arm around the waist – and tried to drag her into the woods.”
Maggie Burns, Owen’s mother, was skeptical when her son claimed he hit the kidnapper between the eyes and chest, but police verified his account.
“[The suspect] had obvious signs of injuries consistent with those that would have been sustained from slingshots to the head and chest,” police said in a news release.
