14-Year-Old Boy Texts His Mom

Mason Schermerhorn, a 14-year-old boy, was among the four individuals who lost their lives in a devastating mass shooting at Apalachee High School in Winder, Georgia. Just before he was fatally injured, a mason—who had autism—sent a text message to his mother from a school restroom, assuring her that he was secure. 

Youth minister Ronald Clark, who arrived at the scene promptly, assisted in the search for Mason. Initially, his mother thought he had escaped unharmed, but Clark later had the difficult task of delivering the devastating news that Mason was among the casualties. He recalled Mason as a brilliant, compassionate young man who never allowed his autism to define his identity.

Text messages exchanged between students documented the panic and terror that gripped the school during the shooting incident. One message read,’mass murder. I’m frightened. 

Alanna Wallace, Mason’s sister, described him as overflowing with affection, vitality, and fiercely protective. As she mourns, she’s drawing strength from his memory and leaning on the support of her friends to navigate the difficult emotions.
