A 25-year-old La Mesa police officer, Lauren Craven, lost her life in a tragic accident while assisting drivers involved in a collision, authorities confirmed.
The incident occurred around 10:24 p.m. on Monday, October 20, on eastbound Interstate 8 near Fairmount Avenue. Officer Craven had stopped to help two motorists when she was struck by another vehicle. Despite the swift response of emergency personnel, she succumbed to her injuries at the scene.
The La Mesa Police Department described Craven’s passing as a profound loss for both the department and the wider community. “Officer Craven’s actions in her final moments reflected her unwavering commitment to public safety and the well-being of others,” the department said in a statement.
At the time of the incident, Craven was returning from the San Diego Central Jail. She had joined the department in February 2024, serving in the Patrol Division, and quickly earned the respect of her colleagues for her dedication and professionalism.
In a Facebook post, the department shared a tribute to her character and service:
“It is with deep sorrow that we announce the tragic loss of La Mesa Police Officer Lauren Craven, who was killed in the line of duty late Monday night. Officer Craven was known for her courage, determination, and compassion—qualities that inspired her peers and strengthened the community she served. We ask that you keep her family, friends, and colleagues in your thoughts during this profound loss. Her legacy of service and sacrifice will never be forgotten.”
Her father, David Craven, spoke to ABC 10News San Diego from their hometown of Bend, Oregon, remembering Lauren not just as his daughter but as his “best friend.” He shared that she had just celebrated her 25th birthday on October 7.
David explained that Lauren’s decision to pursue a career in law enforcement was inspired by a personal experience during college, when a detective helped her after an assault. That encounter fueled her desire to “be that good cop for anyone who needs me,” he said, emphasizing the compassion and dedication that defined her career.
The California Highway Patrol is leading the investigation, and no further information has been released regarding the other vehicles involved.
Officer Lauren Craven’s death serves as a somber reminder of the daily risks law enforcement officers face while protecting their communities. Her bravery, selflessness, and unwavering commitment to helping others leave an enduring legacy that will be remembered by her family, colleagues, and all those she served.
