Just a few days before the wedding, I found out that my fiancé had cheated on me. I confided in my dad and he said, “We can’t call off the wedding now. The invitations have already been sent.” On the big day, as he walked me down the aisle, I noticed something odd—the aisle didn’t lead to the altar. Instead, he turned to a side door, away from the guests. I asked him, confused, and he winked at me.
“Dad, what’s going on?” I asked. He replied, “You don’t have to undergo it. I have already told the guests that the wedding is postponed due to a personal matter. They will understand. You don’t have to explain anything today.”
When we walked outside to where a small group of close friends and family had gathered in the beautifully decorated garden, I felt a sense of relief. There was no sign of a wedding ceremony – just a celebration of love and support.
As a child, I struggled with how I looked, convinced that I was unattractive. One day, staring into the mirror, I broke down and asked my father, “Why do I look so ugly?” He overheard and replied, “Oh, you didn’t know that? Before you were born, I accidentally sent my good looks to the wrong address. Don’t worry, I kept the receipt!”
Confused, I asked, “Receipt?”
He smiled and said, “Yeah. When you turn 18, we can trade it for something even better – a charming personality that makes everyone forget what you think is ‘ugly’. Trust me, it’s a much better solution.”
I couldn’t help but laugh through my tears. “Until then,” he added, “you’ll keep that face—and it’s a pretty good one if you ask me.”
When I failed my first year at university, my parents didn’t blame me. My mom sat next to me while I cried, hugging me until I calmed down. She assured me that this wasn’t the end of the world and that she would always be proud of me. © fForgetfulgiraffe / Reddit
My parents were always open and accepting of me. I remember them saying, “We don’t care what or who you are,” and that stuck with me when I came to terms with my bisexuality. When I came out to them, they kept their word and accepted me completely. My mom and I even talk about LGBT topics over tea and my dad can’t stop making puns. © Dia_Danger / Reddit
While my parents aren’t perfect, they did a lot of things right. One of the most significant was their unwavering support of my brother and I, even when they didn’t understand our hobbies. They didn’t care about skateboarding but still spent hundreds of dollars for my brother to enjoy it. They helped me get a drum kit and let my band practice in the basement and took us to all our gigs.
They wanted me to be a lawyer, but they were fine with me becoming a chef. This freedom has allowed me to realize that I can follow my path and make decisions based on what I enjoy, with their love and support always behind me. © migrant / Reddit
My dad was always fair. When conflicts arose, we sat down together and evaluated all sides of the issue. If I was right, he would have acknowledged it, but still helped me find a way to resolve the situation with the other person. If I was wrong, he would lead me to find out for myself.
This approach built trust and respect between us and I knew I could always talk to him about anything. He never let me judge, he just supported and guided me. © _misst / Reddit
When I was little, we lived near the highway. One day I asked my mom how far it went and where we would end up if we kept driving. Instead of showing me the map, she said, “Let’s take a look.”
We jumped in the car and drove for hours, only pulling out the map when we were tired. We found our way home along the shore of one of the Great Lakes. This was before GPS and cell phones and I was about 10. She let me navigate my way back home and taught me that sometimes the journey itself is a lesson. © Panic_Azimuth / Reddit
