After the water main that led to the house burst, workers had to install a new pipe from the street to the first floor. After cleaning everything, I went to get enough water for a family of four for a week.

They indicated it would be an unexcused absence when I asked to take the afternoon off work to sort it out. I was furious about it. I applied my anger to work as a way to release my tension without planning to quit. I unexpectedly got a new job with full schedule flexibility and a $30,000 salary increase. © Reddit/Pinelands1901

In college, I knocked on the wrong dorm room. The man who answered asked me if I was present at the card game. “Sure,” I replied and met a really nice woman.

When I saw that the restaurant I liked was closed, I turned left rather than right. Thirty-five years after I reopened it, we’re still in business. It has changed the lives of 28 employees, my wife, my children, and myself. © Reddit/bbqtom1400

Around March of last year, I was at rock bottom. My girlfriend of four years just cheated on me. I felt down. ‘To Paradise’ by Hanya Yanagihara was a book review that appeared on Instagram one night when I was aimlessly browsing because I was feeling down. I texted the individual who submitted the review to tell them how wonderful it was and how well it reflected the book itself. After that,, we started conversing. As a child, I suffered from hydrocephalus, a neurological disorder that was kept alive by a shunt. Every few years it would crack or get infected and need to be replaced. I had an infection about 20 years ago but my neurosurgeon didn’t take it seriously so it wasn’t properly identified for two years until I ended up in the ER one night. Basically, while I was waiting for surgery, we found out that I wasn’t actually using my shunt and that I no longer needed it due to some malfunctioning medical device that was strangely not working properly. After the infection subsided, I was discharged home and the procedure was postponed. I haven’t had surgery in fifteen years.

As much as I hate the way it happened, I wouldn’t change a thing because I would need another brain surgery and another and another if it were any other way. © Reddit/NotAngryAndBitter

When I was bored in college in 2013, I was scrolling through Instagram. Their “sort by new” feature just launched, allowing you to update every second and never catch up on where you were. I’m scrolling through my feed in early December when I come across a selfie of a man who hasn’t shaved since November and still has a beard. I am instantly in love. He is the one. We exchange messages and in two months we will celebrate our tenth anniversary. It’s crazy how coincidental it is that I found his picture among all those pictures. © Reddit/ilikerocks19

On my day off I thought I had a shift so I went to work. I stayed for a few hours because they were understaffed during the lunch rush.

I was close to my grandmother. After she died, she gave me a little box with the words, “For your eyes only.” In her yard was a picture of me as a young man, and underneath it was a hidden message for me.

“Dear Sarah,” it said, “that means you found the picture. You were my light in this garden that had always been my refuge. The letter revealed a secret: under the old stone seat was a secret room where we used to sit, I was so excited that I rushed to her former residence and discovered a stack of savings bonds, realizing how much she cared about me and thanking her in advance.

After a horrible day at work, I’m at my girlfriend’s house searching her bathroom cabinet for medicine. I find a box of tampons while rearranging things. Not a big deal, right? These are for girls. The problem is that the box is open.

And I was deeply shocked by what I discovered inside. There was an engagement ring! My thoughts begin to race. Will he pop the question soon? Of course, I adore her, but this is truly extraordinary. When he walks in and sees me doing it, I’m holding the ring like a naive idiot. “You found it!” she shouts and laughs loudly. I wanted to surprise you with a proposal. I say yes, caught on a surprising journey from confusion to joy between tampons and laughter.
