An animal rescue group was threatened when a family gave up a healthy dog and demanded it be euthanized, only to make an even more heartbreaking discovery when the dog was reunited with a familiar face at the shelter.
In May, Hearts for Paws, a rescue organization in California, shared the sad story of a three-year-old black Labrador named Godric who was brought in by his family after he allegedly bit their child who was crawling into his food. However, the family’s decision went beyond simply giving up their dog – they also wanted Godric euthanized.
Thankfully, the shelter didn’t cry for euthanasia, and Heart for Paws described Godric as a “sweet” dog. “It’s hard to believe that his family wanted him to delay,” they said in the video.
But when they saw Godric playing with another dog in their yard, another shocking discovery was made: The second dog, a six-year-old male named Sadie, had also been surrendered to the same family weeks earlier for allegedly “grinding” a child.
“The family asked both dogs to be euthanized,” Heart for Paws shared.
Although it’s understandable for parents to be protective of their newborn, Heart for Paws argued that even though the family no longer wanted the dogs, it was their responsibility to find them a new home rather than asking for euthanasia.
The rescue also stressed that dogs’ behavior does not necessarily indicate aggression. In fact, they were “exceptionally sweet.”

“Any dog can bite under unfair circumstances and growling should never be punished or treated as a death sentence.” Growling is how dogs communicate and is important for bite prevention,” they explained.
The story caused outrage among many online. One person commented: “Pray this family never tries to get another dog. Hearts for Paws clarified that the family did not adopt Godric and Sadie and speculated that the dogs were bought from a breeder.
In this month’s update, they shared that Godric found a foster home, while Sadie, the longest resident at the shelter, was transferred to Miranda’s rescue in Fortuna, California, where he was still waiting for a permanent home.
