A Family of Six Converts a 40-Foot School Bus into Their Home and Offers a Tour Inside

Imagine a life where your backyard is the open road, and each day brings new landscapes to explore. Meet AJ, John, and their four energetic children, who have transformed a 40-foot school bus into a comfortable, on-the-go dwelling.

With a sharp eye for design and a talent for carpentry, John has turned the bus into a haven that accommodates six individuals and a multitude of aspirations.

The cozy living area, equipped with a U-shaped sofa and concealed storage compartments, also serves as the parents’ sleeping space, thanks to an ingeniously designed pull-out bed.

However, their resourcefulness goes beyond that. The family’s electrical setup showcases contemporary marvels.

Open shelving proudly showcases containers of spices and grains, many of which were cultivated on their former farm. In accordance with their inclination towards electrical appliances, they’ve chosen to go with an induction cooktop and an air fryer instead of the conventional stove. Even the sink boasts a light that changes color according to the water temperature, injecting a touch of playfulness into the functional area.

Their commitment to sustainability is evident in their choices.

For water filtration, they’ve chosen an Eco filter gifted by John’s aunt, diverging from the more popular Berkey system. This filter takes its place prominently on the kitchen counter, ensuring the purification of every drop of water they consume. The decision to embrace bus life was not impulsive; eight years ago, they contemplated the shift but opted to remain on their farm to provide their young children with a stable environment.

The sleeping quarters differ significantly from their previous setup, a shared family bed at their farmhouse. The bus’s exterior is just as practical as the interior, housing 125 gallons of fresh water, 75 gallons of gray water, and two LP tanks for outdoor cooking. The inclusion of security cameras enhances their safety, granting the family peace of mind as they venture into new territories.

As they ponder the future, AJ and John are exploring the idea of constructing another bus or even offering customized builds for others.
