Influencer Paul Kim Shares Heartbreaking Loss of Son After Flu Complications
What begins as a common illness can sometimes turn into a nightmare no parent is prepared for. For Paul Kim and his family, that nightmare became real when his five-year-old son, Micah, passed away on New Year’s Eve following a severe flu that escalated rapidly.
Kim, a well-known Catholic speaker and social media influencer, shared the devastating news in emotional Instagram videos on January 1, recounting the harrowing ordeal that spanned two weeks. Micah had been hospitalized for 11 days after contracting the flu, which led to seizures and sepsis. Despite being placed on life support, he did not survive.
“After fighting 11 long, hard days, Micah went home to the house of our Father,” Kim said, visibly emotional. “We are so proud of him. From the bottom of my heart, thank you for all the ways you prayed and lifted us during this time.”
Throughout Micah’s hospital stay, Kim provided updates, sharing both hope and heartbreak. By Christmas, his son’s heart function showed slight improvement, but brain swelling remained critical. On December 27, an MRI revealed severe brain damage. “In their opinion, there is no medical possibility of recovery,” Kim explained. “At this point, only God can intervene.”

Despite the grim prognosis, Kim and his family explored every possible avenue, consulting medical, legal, and ethical experts to ensure nothing was left untried. “As a father, that is my duty—even if, in God’s ultimate will, recovery was not meant for him,” he said.
The family has received overwhelming support from the community, including celebrities like Gwen Stefani, and a GoFundMe campaign has raised over $385,000.
Kim’s reflections highlight the fragility of life, the strength of faith, and the devotion of a parent facing unimaginable loss. “Our hearts are broken,” he said, “but we trust in the Lord. Please pray for my family as we learn to live by faith and not by sight.”
Micah’s story is a poignant reminder that life can change in an instant, and even in heartbreak, faith, community, and love can provide light.
