A guy named Austin Jones is redefining what it means to live a fulfilling life in a small Michigan community. Austin was diagnosed with Spinal Muscular Atrophy with Respiratory Distress (SMARD) at birth in 1996 and was given two years to live.
But right now, at 27, he’s a thriving business owner, devoted husband, and proud father of twins. His journey is more a monument to the power of love, hope, and tenacity than just a story of survival.

He repeatedly overcame obstacles in Austin’s life. After being diagnosed with SMARD, a disorder that causes respiratory failure, paralysis, and muscle weakness, he was given a poor prognosis. Although the muscle weakness associated with SMARDs usually stops growing around age two, according to the National Association of Rare Disorders, symptoms can be quite severe in young children.
Despite these difficulties, Austin prospered. Although he has been using a wheelchair and a ventilator since suffering respiratory failure in 2003, his positive attitude has not been affected.

Instead of viewing his illness as a negative, Austin sees it as “the greatest possible blessing.” On the website of her clothing line Live Intrepid, she offers her inspiring view. The business, which promotes Austin’s belief in an adventurous and fearless life, also raises funds and awareness for SMARD, a disorder that affects just 100 people worldwide.
A life full of love and adventure
With his boundless energy, Austin traveled to 38 states, pursuing his goals and making many friends along the way. But social networks could be the biggest turning point on his journey. Austin recognized Muckala in 2021; she was a single mother to a three-month-old baby girl, Hazel. Their bond was strong and immediate. After seven months of courtship, Muckala, Hazel, and Austin got together and started a family. After marrying in August 2023, Austin and Muckala welcomed their twins, Penelope and Poppy, shortly after.
He triumphs in spite of the misery
Many others were moved by the couple’s love story and Austin’s wedding dance with his mother, which went viral on social media. Online trolls, on the other hand, unfairly attacked them, making baseless accusations about Muckal’s plans to marry Austin.
The couple dismissed the disparaging remarks and instead focused on their love and new family.
