This year, Garrett’s mother, Nancy, took Santa to the mall to visit; she just wanted to brighten his day a little. After parking in the handicapped spot, they went to see Santa.
When they got back to the car, they were beyond impressed! Someone wrote something on the car.
“UR not handicapped” was scrawled in lipstick on the vehicle.
Naturally, Nancy felt terrible about this and was upset and upset about what happened in the parking lot. The Grinch had no idea what her family had to deal with on a daily basis.
Around age three, the Garretts were diagnosed with Batten disease, a degenerative neurological condition that causes them to gradually lose their motor skills over time.
Unfortunately, his sight is gone, his speech is rapidly deteriorating and he is confined to a wheelchair. There is no known therapy or cure for this condition. The disorder often results in the child’s death.
Even worse and confusing is why anyone would do what they did when their car was legally parked in a handicap-accessible spot in the mall!
I can’t believe someone could be so annoying, stupid, and disrespectful about a topic I deal with every day, Nancy said.
They also expressed their outrage at what happened there at the mall and talked about it.
The mall is cooperating fully with authorities during the investigation to help identify the perpetrator.
The family is furious at first, but after some thought and reflection, they only hope that the perpetrator will understand that what they did was wrong.
After learning of Garrett’s illness, the Coynes later founded a non-profit organization called Garrett the Grand—Batten Fighter.
They raised an incredible $100,000 to support Garrett and children like him while helping other children with Batten Disease.
The family was really upset at first, but after thinking about it for a while, they just hope the person realizes what they did wrong.
