When seven princesses and Prince Charming showed up in Grand Rapids, Michigan last week to support Danielle, the five-year-old princess adopted by Jim and Sarah Koning, everyone was shocked.
Caseworkers, obviously fit for a princess, donned tiaras and wands as fairy godmothers for the hearing. The judge even joined in the celebrations and dressed up as a princess to honor the occasion.
The family was ecstatic to have completed the “long journey” of adoption, and Danielle’s princess surprise added to the specialness of the day, according to mother Sarah Koning.
“It was something we were looking forward to for a long time, so it was already a fantastic day, but it got even better,” Koning told TODAY.
“Having the princesses there was another experience for her and it’s something she’ll remember for the rest of her life because she knows we love her and she’s in the right place.”
During the hearing, the princesses celebrated Danielle’s adoption and wished her all the best for her new permanent family.
“It’s been a long journey because of a contested adoption,” she said.
But when the Konings’ big day finally arrived, Danielle’s foster care manager at Samaritans, Kristina Grey, came up with the princess concept.
Gray admitted that he knew Danielle was worried about her future. She elaborated, “Consistency was a problem for her.” “She wanted to know who she was and where she belonged.
Gray continued, “I knew at that moment that I had to make her adoption day memorable.”
Koning appreciates this wonderful day.
“I was shocked to the core,” she said.
“It’s been incredible to see it develop and realize how memorable it will be for Danielle.”
“We feel honored to have these two children and raise them, teach them, and love them,” Koning said.
