Sometimes we hear stories that leave a lasting impact on us, stories that resonate so deeply that we can never forget them. This is one such story and it is a story that teaches us valuable lessons.

At just four years old, John Quinn of Tennessee was like any other young boy—joyful, curious, and full of life. But one day something happened that changed his world forever.

The dog accidentally knocked over a lighted candle while playing in the family’s garden shed with their pet pit bull/dachshund mix, Max. In no time the room was engulfed in flames.

John’s older sister Leah heard his cries and rushed to his rescue, managing to pull him out of the fire. But by then the damage was already done. Leah suffered 25 percent burns, but John was burned to 95 percent of his body. While Leah’s quick thinking saved his life, John was put into an induced coma for two months and spent a year in a specialist burns unit.

Over the course of 87 surgeries, John’s body was slowly worked on, but mentally he began to lose hope. He developed anorexia and began to feel indifferent to his body. People stared at him wherever he went, and as a teenager, he faced bullying and cruel taunts.

John finds himself questioning the value of his life after surviving a horrific accident. “Why did I even survive? Why didn’t I just die in the fire? I’ve been asking about it all along,” he admitted in an interview with The Sun.

Things began to change for John when he and Leah began attending camps run by the Burned Children Recovery Foundation in Washington state. He is also involved with the Courageous Faces Foundation, an organization that helps educate the public to see everyone as a person first and celebrate their unique qualities.

Although he wouldn’t wish his experience on anyone, John now believes his struggles have made him a more compassionate and empathetic person. His hardships have given him a deeper understanding of the pain of others, and he channels his empathy into helping others in need.

Now 25 years old, John continues to raise awareness for burn victims, or “burn thrivers” as he prefers to call himself. He also did bodybuilding, which helped him fight anorexia. Despite numerous obstacles, he has embraced life to the fullest and is moving forward every day.

With big dreams for the future, John hopes to become an actor, and artist and possibly study psychology to better understand emotions and how to support others in need.

I’m really excited to see how far John has come and I’m grateful that he can now help others who have faced similar challenges. His story is one of resilience, strength, and compassion.
