In a world that often favors superficial beauty and conformity, Ilka Brühl’s story stands out as an inspiring testament to the power of self-acceptance and resilience. Born with a rare genetic condition called ectodermal dysplasia, which affected her facial appearance, Ilka faced numerous challenges and unkindness from others throughout her life. However, instead of succumbing to the negativity, she chose to embark on a journey of self-discovery, self-love, and empowerment that not only changed her life but also inspired countless others around the world.
Early life and diagnosis
Ilka Brühl was born in January 1992 in Germany and at first glance she looked like any other baby. However, it didn’t take long for the health workers to notice that something was different. Ilka’s breathing problems were the first indicator that her health condition might not be completely typical. It was soon discovered that she had a blocked airway and required immediate surgery to fix the problem. Further medical examination revealed that she had a cleft palate, marking her as “different” from the start.
Growing up with a different face presented unique challenges for Ilka, but it was her indomitable spirit that set her apart. At school, she faced teasing and cruelty from her peers, who called her a “pig-nosed”, “freak” and “intruder”. Despite the unkindness she encountered, her parents unwaveringly supported her and instilled in her the belief that she was perfect just the way she was. As a child, she responded confidently to hurtful comments and stares thanks to her parents’ encouragement.
Imagine being a lone student at school who wanted to play and when the other students saw you, they teased and pointed at you.
Millions of people around the world now look to Ilka as an inspiration. Through his work, he hopes to help others.
When Ilka Brühl was born in January 1992, her parents thought everything was fine with their daughter. She was, really. The rescuers found breathing problems in the little girl. Her nose was blocked for some unknown reason.
Doctors repaired her cleft palate and performed emergency surgery. It was clear that little Ilka was somehow “different” at that moment.
Around the world, many children find school quite challenging. Unfortunately, Ilka was more aware of this than the others. The kids didn’t understand, even though she was exactly the same as every other student at her school.
Children at school reportedly made fun of her appearance and questioned it.
At first, I thought, how else should I show up? This is me! But then I noticed something was wrong when I looked at myself in the mirror. Then you start asking questions,” she told the German newspaper Kurier.
She was a sweet little kid, but she was constantly teased at school. They refused to play with her and called her names like “Freak”, “Alien” and “Pig Nose”.
“As a child, I often had eye infections because I didn’t have a developed tear duct, and headaches because my sinuses were very sensitive to moisture,” stated Ilka.
Nevertheless, I was always able to cope with the symptoms.
“My parents always made me feel that I was right the way I was,” the woman continued. When I was younger, I could boldly ignore stupid remarks or looks. However, the question “If I’m supposed to be so normal, why don’t you see people like me anywhere?” appeared during adolescence.
So that her parents wouldn’t hang her at home, Ilka tried to consciously grin in the pictures.
She explained, “That was my avoidance tactic.” “If I’m looking at pictures so stupid that mom won’t hang it up, I don’t have to see it either.”
Ilka found that her self-confidence grew as she got older. not only from the TV commercial but also from what she was told in class. Ilka argued that product advertisements often enforce societal norms of what is beautiful, and she believed she was never underrepresented. Because of this, the girl said, exposing her face was much more embarrassing than exposing her naked body.
She suffered a lot of bullying at school, but she refused to like it. Ilka did extremely well in school and was at the top of her class in class.
She said: “It was like a kind of double life.”
Everything was different before the photo shoot.
Due to her low self-confidence and self-esteem, Ilka had a hard time making friends.
She underwent ten procedures, and although she had trouble accepting herself, things began to improve over time. She soon understood that she was just as valuable as everyone else and became a confident woman who wanted to set an example for others.
Everything changed in 2014 when she was on her way to her first photo shoot.
“I turned around a few times on the way to [the photographer] because I was so afraid he would laugh at me when he saw me in real life,” she said in her letter.
“When I had the camera in my face, I revealed:
It’s okay because every imperfection and flaw is part of who you are. All you have to do is maximize it,” she continued.
When Ilka was twenty years old, she underwent a nose operation.
At first, Ilka thought that the operation would finally give her the confidence to hug, although it was more for medical purposes.
However, things changed after the promotion.
You can shine from within if you embrace who you are.
“As soon as the wounds healed, I saw another spot. That’s when I learned that beauty cannot be made on the operating table,” said Ilka.
In my opinion, beauty is primarily about appearance. Accepting who you are allows you to shine from the inside out, and that’s more attractive than being the most ideal person but not liking who you are.”
Ilka realized that she had other options than to undergo more surgeries to change her appearance. Being considered a “normal” person by others was not as important to her as learning to accept herself.
I became more confident and open to others. And he realized: “I withdraw from others, not the other way around.
Although Ilka was aware of her “strange” appearance, it was not unnatural. She would rather cherish her quirks. The German-born woman felt that by sharing her struggles and life lessons, she could encourage others to embrace who they are.
Brühl then published a podcast detailing her approach to overcoming self-doubt. She also gives tips on how to increase your self-love. She even had the book Otherwise Beautiful: How I Learned to Love Myself written.
Together with several friends, she started the Grenzenlos project, which translates to Project Limitless, in 2018. The aim of the campaign is to draw attention to the beauty of people who live with physical abnormalities and disabilities. She believes it is in line with Ilka Brühl’s idea of beauty.
