A Young Girl’s Letter to Her Future Self, Penned Months Before Her Passing

The desires of youth are often filled with dreams of college, travel, and expanding their social circle. Taylor Smith, a seemingly ordinary 12-year-old girl from Johnson City, Tennessee, was no exception. Her days were filled with the warmth of family and friends and she enjoyed watching the beloved television series Doctor Who. In April 2013, she put pen to paper and created a letter to her future self that would be kept in a box in her room, accompanied by a clear instruction: “Open Taylor Smith April 12, 2023, only (unless otherwise noted).”

Unfortunately, she did not live long enough to see if her hopes were fulfilled. Just a few months after sending this letter, Taylor tragically died due to complications from unexpected pneumonia.

Her parents, Tim and Mary Ellen Smith, were distraught. They couldn’t believe their girl was gone forever.

One day they were searching her possessions when they found the note. They were so moved by it that they decided to post it online to reassure others.

Mary Ellen responded to her daughter’s message: “I can’t physically resurrect her, I can’t bring her back, but I’m so grateful that people are inspired by her story.”

Below is a copy of the letter Taylor wrote to herself.

Have a nice day, Taylor

How is life treating you? Nowadays (in 10 years) everything is relatively simple. Sorry to be a little late, but it’s early as I write, so congratulations on graduating high school! If not, go back and try again. Take the title! Are you and I going to college? If not, I agree. After all, we have a very good rationale.

Don’t forget Allana turns 11 today! Wow, 11 already? She was recently in my time! However, I was unable to attend this party as I was in Cranks, Kentucky on my first mission trip. It’s barely been six days since I’ve been back!

In regards to how you feel about God? Have you recently studied the Bible, prayed, worshiped or gone to serve the Lord? If not, get up and do it immediately! No matter where you are in your life, just do it! He underwent mockery, beatings, torture and crucifixion for you! A sinless man who never hurt you or anyone else!

Do you have any recent mission trips? Have you ever traveled abroad? What about flying?

Doctor Who Broadcast Continuity? If it wasn’t, how did they end it? Go watch Doctor Who, please! But you have to finish reading your own words of wisdom later!

Do you live alone now? What do we major in when we are in college? I currently want to become a lawyer.

Have you visited Dollywood recently? Wild Eagle is currently their newest feature. So much fun!

If you decide to sell your iPad and get an iPad mini, don’t forget to let your kids know that we’re older than tablets! I also drew an iPad and attached it for you to show them.

However, I believe that is all. But keep in mind that I wrote this ten years ago. Things happened, good and bad. That’s just life and you have to accept it.

Sincerely, Smith, Taylor

Taylor Smith’s legacy extends beyond her years on Earth. Her letter reminds us all to embrace the unpredictability of life, cultivate our faith, and approach each day with the same curiosity and wonder that she embodied. Although she may be physically absent, her spirit lives on, reminding us to live life to the fullest, just as she hoped.

Beautiful comments from an angel who was taken from her family too soon!
