At just four years old, young Abby Furco embarked on a journey that most children her age can hardly fathom. It’s been a journey full of unimaginable challenges, heartbreaking moments, and, against all odds, stunning resilience. The adversary she faced was relentless and menacing: leukemia.
In 2011, Abby received a diagnosis that changed the course of her life forever. Leukemia, a term most of us are familiar with but can hardly comprehend the magnitude of its impact, had taken over her tiny body. The devastating news was accompanied by a grim prognosis – she was given a mere 20% chance of survival. It was nothing but a nightmare come true for Abby and her family.
Patty Furco, Abby’s mother, remembers the moment they received the diagnosis. “We were devastated,” she says, her voice shaking with emotion. “There was very little hope. We basically said he was going to die.” It was a grim and heartbreaking realization that no parent should ever have to face.
From that moment on, life for the Furco family became a constant struggle, with Abby at the center of it all. Their mission was clear: to support Abby in her fight against this relentless adversary and ensure she had the best life possible no matter the circumstances.
For the next six years, Abby’s family did everything they could to help her and make sure she had the best life possible. She underwent a bone marrow transplant, heavy chemotherapy, and experimental drugs.
We kept her in a loving environment knowing we could lose her at any moment. There were times when we weren’t sure if she would survive because she had so many illnesses that could have killed her. We can only watch him fight and try to heal,” Patty said.
In October 2013, there was a glimmer of hope. Abby was able to return to a normal childhood for a “beautiful” year after her therapy ended. She started playing soccer, went to school, and joined the Girl Scouts.
The cancer returned the following September, and this time it was even worse than before.
That initial diagnosis, Patty said, “tested our whole being. She was barely able to speak and was motionless. Every movement was painful.
“She received a second bone marrow transplant in February 2015, but just 15 days later she was diagnosed with graft-versus-host disease, a condition in which the donated bone marrow begins to attack the body.”
A month later, her kidneys began to fail. Doctors informed her parents that she would only survive eight hours without dialysis after being transferred to intensive care.
It was time to say goodbye.
Patty said: “The doctors informed us it was time to let her go as she was only awake for about an hour a day.” We started preparing our other daughters for her death.
Her grandparents traveled to say their final goodbyes after Abby was confined to the hospital. After returning her music and casket, they began the arduous process of arranging her funeral.
When Abby woke up, she had a miraculous experience.
We hear Patty say, “I’ve got so much to live for.”
“After a few days, weeks, and months, she started walking and got stronger,” she added. We could hardly believe it. It is truly miraculous.
Doctors say there is no medical reason for Abby’s recovery.
“We helped her get home after she got hospital care. Jacob Wessler, Abby’s pediatric hematologist and oncologist, said, “But when we started to back off and stop the medication so she wasn’t on as much medication, she started to get better. Alone.”
He has his ups and downs, but if he continues down this path, we’ll all look like fools. He continued. She did not notice any anomalies.
Currently in remission, Abby receives IV steroids twice a day. Despite the uncertainty surrounding her prognosis, her family is optimistic. They take each day as it comes, cherishing every precious moment they have with Abby.
Now we’re focused on the future, Patty said: “We’ve seen her die and come back to life.”
