Upon entering the lawyer’s office to hear their mother’s will, Thomas and Walter were brimming with excitement at the thought of inheriting their mother’s wealth. However, they were taken aback when the lawyer revealed that they had been left only one dollar each. The rest of Teresa’s estate was bequeathed to Grace and Katherine. Teresa had even secretly deposited all the rent money that Grace paid into a savings account for Katherine’s future college education.
While Grace and Katherine cried tears of joy, Thomas and Walter screamed in anger. They had not attended their mother’s funeral and had treated her with neglect in her final years. The lawyer reminded them that they had been left more than they deserved and that their mother had disclosed everything about them. Thomas was particularly disgusted by his brothers’ greed and exited the lawyer’s office with disdain.
Although the thought of being wealthy excited Grace and Katherine, they were also worried about how Thomas and Walter would react. Unfortunately, their fears were realized when the brothers showed up at their doorstep one day, hoping to retrieve a few things from their childhood bedrooms. Grace warned them that they were not welcome and threatened to call the police if they did not leave.
Despite the brothers’ selfish behavior, Grace and Katherine felt fortunate to have been a part of Teresa’s life and to have inherited her estate. They no longer had to worry about financial stability, and Katherine’s future was secure. Teresa’s decision to leave everything to Grace and Katherine, rather than her own sons, was a reminder of the importance of treating loved ones with kindness and respect.
Grace was uneasy with Walter’s affable demeanor but didn’t dwell on it. “Alright, but make it snappy,” she answered. Walter scowled at her response, but Thomas intervened and led him into the house and up the stairs to his old bedroom.
“So, what’s our plan?” Walter inquired as they closed the door.
“We need to find evidence that the woman, Grace, lied to our mother and convinced her to change her will. We’ll have to speak with her and record the conversation,” Thomas explained, scanning the room for any clues.
Suddenly, Thomas noticed an envelope lying on his bed addressed to both of them, and Walter opened it. Inside was a letter from their mother.
“Dear Sons, do not even think about attempting to claim anything from Grace and Katherine! You do not deserve a single penny of my money, given that you were too busy to spend time with me in the past few decades. You already inherited from your father, and that is more than enough. That woman and her daughter were my only family. They cared for me when I was sick, celebrated Christmas with me, ate dinner with me every night, and loved me as much as I loved them.
Now, you two are my sons. I’m your mother, and I love you dearly, always will. But I hope you never have to endure the agony I did. I hope your children never treat you as you treated me. Lastly, I hope you learn from this experience and become better people.
With all my love, Mom.”
Walter looked up at his brother after reading the letter, and Thomas said, “Let’s go.”
They bid farewell to Grace and never approached her again. They only caught a glimpse of the woman each year on the anniversary of Teresa’s death, when they visited her grave. Although she didn’t know why they had altered their behavior, maybe they had learned from this bitter lesson.
Whaattt item!!!???
She left them $1.00 each. Actually, she left them two items. She also left a letter. It’s on the second page of this article.
