A court has heard that keziah macharia, 43, allegedly killed her four-year-old son, kobi dooly-macharia, by stabbing him multiple times in december 2023, apparently distraught over her ex-partner’s new romantic relationship. 

Despite being deemed unfit to stand trial, a ‘fact-finding hearing’ is currently taking place at the inner london crown court to ascertain whether macharia was responsible for the fatal act. 

According to the police’s account, officers discovered kobi lifeless in his bed, with multiple stab wounds and indications of strangulation, when they arrived at the scene on December 20.

Justice Thornton clarified that jurors need to evaluate Macharia’s mental state and decide whether she is responsible for the killing, rather than simply finding her guilty. 

The court learned that macharia and ben dooly, kobi’s father, started dating in 2018 and had their son the following year. Following the birth of kobi, their relationship deteriorated, leading dooly to eventually leave. When dooly began dating sasha sasheva, tensions escalated. 

Prosecutor Mukul Chawla KC stated that Macharia was deeply upset about Kobi spending time with Dooly’s new partner. Sasheva allegedly prevented macharia from posting on social media because they received numerous, concerning messages. 

The CCTV footage captured Macharia collecting kobi from nightingale primary school in Hackney around 4:30 p.m. on the day of the incident. The video footage did not reveal any indications of distress or unusual actions.

That evening, Macharia started consuming alcohol, although the exact time and quantity of her intake are uncertain. At 10:42 p.M., she sent dooly a WhatsApp message filled with bitterness and finality, wishing him and sasheva a “happy life” and saying she couldn’t go on knowing kobi would share their surname. The message concluded with a sorrowful goodbye. 

Shortly after, she sent additional messages: ‘Kobi is dead’ and ‘You can thank Sasha for that.’ These messages prompted Dooly and Sasheva to immediately contact the police. 

At 10:59 p.M., the police officers arrived at macharia’s residence, but there was no initial response. She was reportedly engaged in a WhatsApp conversation with a woman named Reena, during which Macharia allegedly confessed to the murder of her son. Ms. Life later informed the police that she had taken notes during the call. 

At 11 p.M., macharia sent a message to sasheva, using a derogatory term, and then another angry message to dooly a minute later. 

Authorities forcibly entered the residence and found macharia lying on the living room floor, covered in blood-stained garments. A blade was discernible behind her. When questioned about the incident, she placed her hand on her chest, implying that she was the one who carried out the act.

The prosecution claims that macharia also confessed to attempting self-harm and overdosing. The officers discovered kobi lying next to a double bed in his crib. He was pronounced dead at 12:06 a.m. on December 21st. 

At the Stoke Newington police station, Macharia appeared withdrawn and emotionally subdued, occasionally shedding tears. She repeatedly conveyed her remorse, explaining to the officers that all she desired was to witness her son’s ‘gorgeous face’ once more. 

The investigators discovered that her physical injuries were not severe and aligned with the common practice of restraining and handcuffing individuals. 

The court’s hearing continues as it aims to uncover the truth behind this tragic situation.
