A Hero’s Sacrifice: Missouri Teenager Drowns Saving Younger Brother
In a heartbreaking act of heroism, 18-year-old Alex Harris of Missouri lost his life trying to save his four-year-old brother Asher…
A Missouri boy who drowned while saving his four-year-old sibling is being hailed as a hero.
On July 23, Asher Harris, 18, was caught in a strong current while his brother Alex, 18, was swimming in the Missouri River.
The boys’ father, Tyson Harris, told TODAY Parents, “I heard Alex screaming for help and my wife and I ran.”
“The water was flowing very fast, it was something I had never seen before.
According to Harris, “Alex held Asher until his mother arrived, and then he went downstairs.”
I watched as his hands loosened and he fell. I was aware of the fatigue Alex was experiencing, Nikki’s mother was participating. I made every effort to approach him earlier.
The following day, Alex’s body was pulled from the water.
“My son is a hero,” Harris said. “If he had to repeat that action 100 times, he would do the same thing every time. He wouldn’t walk away from Asher.”
Harris claimed that despite their 14-year age difference, Alex and Asher shared a unique bond. Days before his death, Alex was seen on a family security video comforting Asher, who had scraped his knees after falling off his bike.
Harris stated: “We have a video of Alex holding Asher.
Alex was employed at his family’s clothing store in northwest Missouri after graduating high school in June.
We would be moving thousands of decoys around the fields very early in the morning. He was someone I could always count on, Harris said. Simply put, people enjoyed his surroundings. We see countless clients every year and many of them remember Alex.
Asher told people that his brother was in heaven with Jesus and that he was aware of how Alex saved his life, according to Harris. However, he has no idea that Alex will not return.
An emotional Harris recalled, “We drove to work together every morning—a 15-minute drive and I really looked forward to it.” We discussed various topics while listening to music. He comes here every morning I suppose. I’ll stay here for a while and pretend he might be getting closer.
When driving on a river or other turbulent body of water, the Missouri State Highway Patrol advises that a personal flotation device is required.
Even if you’re an experienced swimmer, your energy will run out quickly if you’re caught in the current, Sgt. Shane Hux told TODAY. “Our state troopers always wear life jackets when patrolling the river.
