In a heartwarming story spanning six decades, Len Albrighton, 79, and Jeanette Steer, 78, have finally been united in marriage. Their extraordinary journey of love, separation, and reunion is a testament to the enduring power of true love…
Two teenage sweethearts, more than six decades apart, have now married. When they first fell in love, the couple wanted to spend the rest of their lives together, but their parents forbade them to marry because they didn’t want to unite their families. Len Albrighton, 79, and his sweetheart Jeanette Steer, 78, were first engaged in the 1960s when they first met as nurse practitioners on the Isle of Wight and planned to move to Australia to start living together, they finally exchanged wedding vows when they were almost eighty years old.
But at the time the legal age for marriage in the UK was twenty-one. Len, who was nineteen, required the consent of Jeannette’s parents as she was only eighteen. The couple was kept apart for 60 years because they were denied permission to marry the love of their lives.
Len decided to live out his goal of emigrating to Australia from the UK because he was never satisfied there. However, communication between the pair was never completely cut off. And within sixty years they were able to reconnect and now they have successfully re-entered their lives. Since getting married, they have been living in Stevenage, Herts, Australia, where life is “fantastic” for the couple.
In the 1960s, Jeannette’s parents forbade her marriage to Len. The wedding was called off because he had already moved to Australia leaving him stranded without his bride to fend for himself. After reading a letter from his unhappy bride, he is devastated to discover that her parents have forbidden her to marry him, uproot her life, and move across the world to live with him in Australia.
Len and Jeannette created their own families and lives during the 60 years they were separated. In Australia, Len married another woman and built a house on the land he had originally bought for himself and Jeannette. She eventually has three children.
Len and Jeanette grew up on the Isle of Wight, where Jeanette continued to reside. After marrying a naval officer, she had two children. She had a successful career as a nurse.
Len’s relationship broke up in 2015. So he decided to find out if his former love was still alive. He went looking for Jeanette and found her on the Isle of Wight.
“I was scared because I had no idea how she would react or even if I would see her. I just went out of curiosity. It was hard to find, but I managed to do it. I had no expectations other than that the result of my trip there I was incredibly excited and shocked.
After their unexpected reunion, Jeanette’s husband died two years later. Six decades after their first try, Len quickly intervened and the couple were happily married.
“Married life is fantastic—it couldn’t be better,” exclaimed Jeanette. “It’s nice to have someone who treats me with respect. I love doing everything and anything with Len.”
Their story serves as a reminder that love, when true and deep, can overcome time, distance, and life’s challenges.
