Against all odds, a remarkable young woman named Sky Castner achieved remarkable success by gaining admission to the prestigious Harvard University. Her journey is a testament to resilience, determination, and the power of mentorship.
Sky Castner’s life began under trying circumstances when she was born in the Galveston County Jail. Her mother was incarcerated at the time of her birth and her father, determined to give her a loving home, took her into his care. From that moment on, Skye’s life took an unconventional path.
The idealistic young lady never wavered in her determination to attend Harvard despite the repeated moves she and her father went through during their childhood. Sky, who was born in prison 18 years ago, finished third in her class at Conroe High School last week and won a scholarship to study law at arguably the most prestigious university in the world.
According to the Courier, Sky began her Harvard application with the line “I was born in prison.”
Sky was a “voracious” reader in elementary school and a student who excelled in the classroom as a young child, according to sources cited by The Houston Chronicle. Teachers at Reaves Elementary believed she needed additional mentoring to reach her full potential.
Mona Hamby and the CISD project mentor were there to help. Sky Courier heard him say: “I got a documentary about her. She admired Rosa Parks, loved to read, and adored the tacos at Dairy Queen.
That sounds like a smart young lady, in my opinion. I still have that paper to this day.
Rumor has it that Mona and Sky became close because they didn’t know each other’s mothers.
She informed me, “I was in jail,” Mona continued. I replied, “No, that can’t be right. He needs more.” I was aware that I couldn’t just take this kid out to lunch once a week.
Sky’s mentor gave her tips on how to choose her first pair of glasses, get a haircut at the salon, and improve how much she enjoys her free time.
“It was a very different environment to what I grew up in, and that’s not a bad thing,” Sky said. “Everything Mona taught me was very valuable, just like everything I went through before Mona was very valuable.
After visiting Harvard with Mona and her husband in 2022, Sky’s desire to go there only grew stronger. Her request was consulted with James Wallace, a professor at Boston University.
Sky told the Courier: “He helped me tell my story in the best possible way.”
Gentlemen! What an inspiring story. I’m not sure about you, but I’m extremely happy for Sky.
Sky’s journey is a testament to the power of education, mentorship, and the resilience of the human spirit. Her future at Harvard promises continued growth and success, and her story will no doubt inspire others to pursue their dreams with unwavering determination.
