It was a cold afternoon, when Rachel, a single mother trying to meet, found herself face to face with an older woman in the Walmart parking lot.
When her gas reservoir was low and its budget stretched thin, Rachel’s instinct should have said no. But something in the desperate eyes of a woman caused her break – an impulse that she couldn’t ignore.
Lachel knew that one small, seemingly insignificant act of kindness would trigger a chain of events that would forever change her life. What started as a simple church ride would lead to a meeting, an unexpected fortune and a lesson in how far he could compassion.
Rachel has long mastered the art of stretching every dollar. As a single mother, life was a constant leveling act – one incorrect step or unexpected cost and everything could collapse.
One day, when she parked in Walmart Lot, an older homeless woman approached Rachel and asked for a ride to the Church of Sts. Marie. Rachel hesitated.
The gas was expensive. Every penny mattered.
“I’m sorry, I …” Rachel started, but then her eyes met with a woman.
After a short break, she looked at her son Joey and then sighed. “Okay, come on.”
While driving, the woman expressed gratitude and repeatedly thanked Rachel with a sincere tone.
When they arrived at the church, the woman hurriedly left the car. “God bless you,” she whispered before she disappeared into the church.
Rachel sat there, watching her when Joey’s voice cut out silence. “Mom, you did the right thing.”
Rachel forced a smile. “I hope yes, sweetheart.”
She knew a little that the simple act of kindness would soon change her life upside down.
Three days later, he changed everything on the door.
Opening the door, Rachel froze. Standing in her corridor was the same woman – but she was no longer a person that Rachel had seen only a few days before.
The woman was dressed in a stylish cream coat, her silver striped hair now perfectly stylized.
“What … what’s going on?” Rachel asked, still stunned.
The woman smiled and understood her expression. “My name is Eliza,” she said, and her voice smoothly and polished. “And I owe you an explanation.”
“Please come.”
Eliza sat elegantly on a worn couch and smoothed the expensive substance of her coat. Rachel was sitting across from her, still trying to process what was happening.
Finally, Eliza started talking. “I was lost when you found me. Not only the homeless, but really lost. And I have been for years.”
Rachel listened carefully as Eliza shared her story.
Once she was engaged to a man named Albert, who loved her deeply. But on the day of their wedding, Eliza decided to change her life forever.
“I told Albert that I wasn’t ready to settle down,” Eliza explained. “I needed to chase my dreams. He was a broken heart.”
“But he never gave up,” she continued.
“He left me a letter on the day I left and told me he would wait for me in the Church of Our Lady every Sunday at noon, no matter how long it took.”
Rachel was gasped. “He did it?”
Eliza smiled her tears. “He did. And he was there, he was waiting.”
“He built the empire while waiting for me,” she added quietly. “He never stopped believing in us. And when I finally went through these church doors, he welcomed me with open arms.”
Rachel wiped her own tears, moving with the story.
Eliza paused and then added, “That day I asked so many people for a ride, but you were the only one who really saw me. When I told you Albert, he insisted to find you.”
Albert.
“I wanted to thank you personally,” Albert’s voice passed, warm and honest. “Because of you, I returned the love of my life.”
Rachel shook her head in disbelief. “I – I didn’t do anything special.”
Albert smiled gently. “You chose a favor when you didn’t have to.”
Then he pulled the envelope out of his jacket and handed her. “This is for you and your son.”
Rachel hesitated and her hands tremble as she opened the envelope.
$ 150,000.
“I don’t know what to say,” she whispered, amazed.
“Then say you will come to our wedding,” Eliza said with a smile. “Albert and I got married next month and we would like to be there and Joey.”
After they left, Rachel was sitting in the silence of her apartment and staring at check in her hands. Joey came and wrapped his hands around the waist.
“Are you okay, Mom?” He asked quietly.
Rachel smiled and held him close. “Yes, sweetheart. I’ve never been better.”
Conclusion
