Big John’s journey to a second chance at life is a testament to the remarkable work done by “Colby’s Crew Rescue” located in Albemarle County, Virginia. This dedicated team of individuals came together to give Big John the care and attention he so desperately needed.
At first glance, Big John may seem like just another horse, but his story is far from ordinary. Once deemed too old to work, Big John found himself in need of a new home and a new zest for life. Luckily, Colby’s Crew Rescue stepped in to make sure he lived out his twilight years with the love and care he deserved.
Big John’s best friend in his new mansion is Cotton, a miniature donkey who lives on the same farm as him.
After being rescued, Big John’s life is flamboyant.
According to the crew, he is “incredibly pampered with 2 beers a day, vet orders, and his own massage gun.”
A horse lives its best life when it has large fields to gallop in, with plenty of hay and the company of other animals. But something was obviously missing.
Big John had several horse friends nearby, but he seemed eager to be around Cotton.
Sensing his loneliness, the rescue crew set out to find him a specific companion to spend his later years with.
Big John wasn’t interested, despite meeting several potential partners—until Stardust came along.

Another older rescue horse named Stardust immediately caught the team’s attention.
They felt that she and Big John would make an ideal couple. They were definitely right too!
The group claims that Big John smitten her the moment he laid eyes on her.
Big John noticed the stardust and, unable to contain his joy, rushed to greet her. The crew discreetly separated them for a few days to make sure they got along.
Big John was ecstatic to finally meet them.
After a few months, it seems like Big John and Stardust have known each other forever.
They eat together, share a paddock, and even snuggle nicely.
Big John likes to rest his head on Stardust’s back, which is one of his favorite pastimes. Although he still enjoys playing with Cotton, Stardust is the one he returns to at night.
The rescue team thinks they should have been together and compares them to an elderly married couple.
The two undoubtedly appreciate the people who saved them and brought them together, even though they may not have met until later in life, the study concludes.
Now they can spend their senior years surrounded by affection.
