In a small village in Suffolk, a father’s decision to withdraw his daughter from school has sparked a heated debate about the content of compulsory s*x education classes. Concerned parent Michael Doherty believes the material his daughter is being taught is highly inappropriate for her age. The controversial move has raised questions about the role of s*x education in schools and the rights of parents to have a say in their children’s education.
Thurston Primary School in Suffolk has come under scrutiny over a s*x education curriculum that Mr Doherty believes is inappropriate for his daughter and her classmates. The explicit nature of the lessons and the way they are delivered shocked him when he asked for a review of the teaching materials used in the school.
The controversial content had actually been part of the curriculum for some time, but parents were not allowed access to the materials. The school cited the COVID-19 pandemic as a reason for not sharing specific details about the sessions with parents.

The headteacher claimed in his letter that the school followed the national PSHE curriculum, although Mr Doherty’s concerns were only raised by the fact that no such national curriculum existed for this purpose. What’s more, he discovered that the PSHE Association, an external charity, had donated the controversial BBC film to the school, which was shown to pupils during lessons, as well as other teaching materials.

Sofia’s teacher denied the video had a s*xual aspect, saying his daughter’s grade did not teach s*x education, even after the video was eventually removed from the site.
But Mr Doherty argued that the school should get permission from parents before showing such videos to pupils.
“What’s going on in the classrooms is really, really weird. Why is my daughter playing a movie about wet dreams? The instructor gave this explanation so she wouldn’t scream ‘eurgh’ when she hears about wet dreams as an adult student. It’s all pretty weird .“Children are overs*xualized,” he noted.
Children leave school uneducated and engage in these behaviors. As a parent, I just find it inappropriate. The video is extremely bizarre and repulsive. It’s a scary and disgusting video. A horrible, disgusting video being pushed into elementary schools is something I don’t want my child to witness. The BBC, which has removed the footage from its website, has vindicated me, he added.
His request to remove his daughter from the school was initially denied, but he eventually succeeded in removing her. Sofia is currently spending time with her family in Poland before starting a new school. Even the idea of homeschooling is being considered by her parents.

The Department for Education’s Relationships, Relationships and s*xuality Education (RSE) and Health Education policies are legal guidelines that must be followed by the PSHE curriculum taught at Thurston Church of England Primary Academy. The curriculum is based on the PSHEAssociation program of study, which is government-funded and subject to quality assurance by the education body to ensure it meets statutory criteria.
