The British royal family has always been involved in scandals, but the connection between the then Prince Charles and his current wife Camilla was one of the most important and shook the monarchy at the time.
Both were married to other people when the nation and the world found out about their affair.
The public did not approve of their union and accused Camilla of a sick union between the heir and Lady Di, a princess who won millions of hearts not only in Britain but also abroad.
In a TV interview with Martin Bashir, Diana discussed the problems in her marriage and the reasons why it failed, saying: “Well, there were three of us in this marriage, so it was a bit crowded.”
It is evident that Charles and Camilla’s love, which began before he met Diana, is sincere.
The daughter of the Chilean ambassador, Lucia Santa Cruz, introduced them through a mutual friend. They started dating but it didn’t last long since Charles joined the Royal Navy. Camilla had already proposed to her now ex-husband Andrew Parker Bowles when his duties were over and he returned home.
They were still close though. Charles remained in touch with Camilla even after he married Diana.
Charles knew he was not in love with Diana, his bride-to-be, but according to royal biographer Penny Junior, it was too late to call off the wedding.
“Charles was not convinced he had done the right thing by marrying Diana, but there was no way out, and buoyed by the hope that things would be different after their wedding, he put on a brave face,” she said. It was reported by the Mirror newspaper.
Most importantly, Camilla and Diana knew this and got along before things changed.
“I got to know [Camilla] really quickly. In the book Diana: In Her Own Words, Diana explains: ‘I was brought into the circle, but I was a threat, even though I was a very young girl.’
Currently, Camilla is the Queen and Charles is the British King.
Over the years, Camilla’s popularity among British citizens has increased. Despite Camilla’s initial anxiety over the public’s reaction to the revelation of her affair, the couple are now leaders of the nation and remain happily married.
Royal analyst Angela Levin, who wrote Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall: A Royal Survivor in 2022, told OK Magazine that once the affair was made public, Camilla had to deal with “torrents” of hatred from the public. Her friends ran her errands for her; she didn’t even go to the shops.
“It was extremely difficult for her because she was portrayed as the worst woman in the world. It must have been a huge shock that people were so cruel to her because she was often called horrible things like “Rottweiler,” Levin continued.
It was revealed that Charles paid for Camilla’s protection for years, or until the two married in 2005, to keep her safe. “Charles probably didn’t realize how terrible it was for her. As Camilla wasn’t a member of the royal family at the time, she didn’t have protection officers and was often busy working hard for the nation.” and the Commonwealth, but Charles paid for her protection when he finally realized that,” Levine revealed.
Despite the challenges she faced on her journey to becoming a member of the royal family, Queen Camilla always had the support of her husband.
Camilla was also often accompanied by Annabel Elliot.
Annabel and Camilla are best friends, not just sisters. After nearly 30 years running Annabel Elliot Interior Design and Antiques in Dorset, Annabel was ranked the sixth best-known female interior designer in the UK in 2014.
Charles and Camilla first stole the show when they posed together in public at Annabel’s 50th birthday party. Later, during Charles and Diana’s divorce, Annabel was the driver of the vehicle that took Camilla out of the limelight and away from the infamous paparazzi.
Annabel eventually became a close member of the royal family, especially with Charles, with whom she is said to have argued at times, especially when she thought he was trying to do most of the work she was hired to do himself.
As Annabel said in the 2012 TV documentary The Royal Restoration: “He always likes to be fully involved and knows what’s being proposed.”
He examines each piece of material and asks himself, “What’s it for? Is it on a chair? Where did you get it? Does it contain nylon? Duvets don’t appeal to him.”
“He brings her everything,” continued the queen’s sister. He is so knowledgeable and interested in so many different topics that she wouldn’t be open-minded until she met him. I won’t go into all that. Even though they are such opposites, they are their yin and yang and it works flawlessly.
When the then Prince of Wales bought Llwywormwood, a house in Wales, for more than £1 million in 2006, Annabel was engaged to help him build it.
Charles disputed claims by the Telegraph that his sister-in-law received more than $380,000 for her work between 2005 and 2008, which several MPs saw as favoritism.
“There was no tender process. Her work is admired by a prince who knows her. “Annabel Elliot is an established interior designer,” a Clarence House spokesman said at the time.
Annabel was used by the royal family on other occasions. She became Charles’ chief interior designer and in 2012 oversaw a project to transform a “dilapidated barn building” at Dumfries House in Ayrshire, Scotland, into a fine guest house. She also created twelve cottages for the Duchy of Cornwall.
Even now, Camilla and Annabel are in constant communication.
The couple had three children together, including Ben Elliot, a businessman and fundraiser for the Conservative Party, who was co-chairman from July 2019 to September 2022. Annabel and Simon Elliot married in 1972.
Of course, Annabel went with her family to the coronation of King Charles last year.
“I remember when I was two years old, I saw this golden coach with my sister and I watched the Coronation of the Queen on a small black and white TV. My feelings are so unreal that I am unable to express them. It is not possible “It was quite an opportunity,” Annabelle explained.
He is much smaller than me, so I was always apprehensive before entering the abbey. “Is she going to be okay?” is what I mean.
