Sixteen-year-old Bryce Brooks of Atlanta had traveled with his family to Pensacola, Florida, for sunshine and rest. Instead, he would give his life so that four children — complete strangers — could live.

The waves proved merciless. Bryce was dragged beneath the surf. Family friend Charles “Uncle Chuck” Johnson dove in after him, determined to pull him to safety, but he too was overpowered. Both were eventually recovered by rescuers and rushed to the hospital, but neither survived.

The news rippled across Atlanta. Bryce’s classmates, teachers, and neighbors gathered at Maynard Jackson High School, releasing balloons skyward in his honor. His mother, Crystal, spoke through tears:
“We’ll never see the man Bryce would have become. But on that day, he became a man by saving those children. We are broken, but we are proud.”

His family soon created the Bryce Brooks Foundation, committed to teaching water safety, offering free swim lessons, and providing scholarships for lifeguard training.
Already, the foundation has awarded six scholarships — one of them to Uncle Chuck’s son — ensuring both men’s bravery lives on in tangible ways.
