Grandmother was held accountable following the tragic deaths of two young brothers in New South Wales. 

Authorities have apprehended a suspect in connection with the tragic deaths of brothers Max Johnson, 7, and Sam Johnson, 6, whose bodies were found in their residence in Coonabarabran, a town in northwest New South Wales, Australia. 

Two law enforcement officers were sent out after a message was received by the department of communities and justice. Upon reaching their destination, they forcefully entered the emu lane residence, where they discovered the boys dead in separate rooms.

A crime scene was established, and a full investigation is now underway, involving officers from the orana mid-western police district and detectives from the nsw homicide squad. 

Kathleen Heggs, a 66-year-old grandmother, has been apprehended and accused of committing two murders. 

According to Sky News Australia, she tried to harm herself when the police arrived at the scene. Heggs was not granted bail and is set to appear at parramatta bail court on Saturday. 

Nsw premier chris minns conveyed his grief over the tragedy, saying, ‘this is a heartbreaking event.’ As a state, we mourn alongside the coonabarabran community for the loss of two young lives full of potential.’. 

‘my heart goes out to their family, friends, and teachers, who are no doubt experiencing unimaginable grief,’ he added

The two young boys had been residing under their grandmother’s supervision for almost a year prior to the incident. 

Assistant commissioner Rod Holland expressed his deep sorrow over the tragic loss of two children in the local area, emphasizing the profound impact it has had on the community. It profoundly impacts a tight-knit country town like this. 

In order to pay tribute to Max and Sam, a candlelight vigil will take place at Neilson Park in Coonabarabran, providing a space for community members to gather and express their grief and support for the family. 

The police in New South Wales have provided reassurance to the public, stating that there is no immediate threat to the community and that they have no reason to suspect any additional individuals were involved in the tragic event.
