The Choice That Belonged to Me
Chapter 1 — 2:07 A.M.
“Mrs.
Vandenberg, we need you at Belvedere General.
Your husband was brought in after a car accident on the interstate.
He wasn’t alone.
I think you should come.”
The call came at 2:07 in the morning.
Dorian had told his wife, Linnea, that he would be spending the night in Philadelphia, closing a deal with key investors.
He was not, according to his own account, anywhere near an interstate at two in the morning, and he was most certainly supposed to be alone.
Linnea asked which hospital, hung up, and stood for a long moment in the dark of her bedroom in Greenwich.
She did not feel the shock the nurse’s voice had braced her for.
She already knew who the other person in that car would be.
And she already knew why the two of them had been on a road they’d each sworn to be nowhere near.
