“If your daughter doesn’t finish those dishes, neither of you is eating tonight,” my mother said — with no idea that I was standing less than thirty feet away, hearing every word.

I had come home to Chicago two days early.

The tech conference I was supposed to attend in Seattle was canceled at the last minute over a venue problem, and instead of calling ahead, I took the first flight out.
