Inside The Mysteries Of Göbekli Tepe, The Oldest Temple In The World
Imagine standing on a hilltop in southeastern Türkiye, in a landscape of dry limestone ridges and eroded gullies, under the kind of sun that has bleached this part of Anatolia for millennia.
The nearest city, Şanlıurfa, is about ten miles to the southeast.
The nearest farming village is a short walk down the slope.
Nothing about the surface of this oval mound would prepare you for what lies beneath it.
And then the trenches open.
Rising from the excavated soil, carved from the same local limestone as the hillside itself, are monolithic pillars.
T-shaped at the top, rectangular below, they stand more than five meters tall in the most dramatic examples.
Their surfaces are covered with images: a snake coiling across a pillar’s shaft, a line of birds in formation, a boar with bristled back, the reaching claws of a predator.
And at the center of each major enclosure, two of the largest pillars face each other across the open interior, their forms subtly but unmistakably suggesting the outline of a human body — narrow-belted, with arms carved in low relief along the sides, hands reaching toward the front.
These pillars are more than 11,000 years old.
They predate Stonehenge by roughly seven thousand years.
They were standing before the first Egyptian pharaoh had a name, before the first Mesopotamian city had a wall.
The people who carved them had no pottery.
They almost certainly had no agriculture in any developed sense.
By the conventional framework that defined much of twentieth-century thinking about prehistory — in which monumental architecture and organized ritual required settled farming communities, social complexity, stored surplus, and specialist classes — none of this should have been possible.
And yet it was.
Göbekli Tepe, which sits in the Germuş mountains of southeastern Anatolia in what is now the Şanlıurfa Province of Türkiye, is one of the most significant archaeological discoveries of the last century.
The site entered serious scientific investigation in the 1990s, when German archaeologist Klaus Schmidt recognized the mound’s potential and began systematic excavations.
