The Note Nobody Read
Part One: The Photograph
The photograph arrived at 4:11 on a Thursday afternoon, roughly ninety minutes after I signed the last page of the settlement agreement.
I was in my study in Bankers Hill with the document still open on the desk in front of me and a cup of tea I had made an hour earlier and not touched.
My phone buzzed, and I turned it over, and there they were.
Christopher on a hospital bed with his arm around Michelle.
Michelle propped on pillows, hair damp, looking wrecked and radiant the way women do in that particular photograph.
Two babies in her arms in two hospital blankets, one blue, one pink.
The caption said: Healthy twins.
Michelle and I are starting our life.
I hope you can find a way to move forward too.
He called forty seconds later.
I want to be honest about what I felt when his name came up, because people always assume it was rage and it was not.
What I felt was a specific tired recognition, the way you feel when a client sends the invoice you told them three weeks ago they would need to send.
He wanted to hear it.
That was the whole purpose of the call.
Eleven years of marriage had ended at 2:40 that afternoon in a conference room, and my husband had gone home and looked at a photograph and thought: she needs to hear my voice while she looks at this.
I picked up.
“Victoria.”
