My Husband Abandoned Me While I Was in Labor Because His Mother’s Birthday Dinner Mattered More Than the Birth of Our Son. “Handle It Yourself. Stop Being So Dramatic,” He Said. Three Days Later He Went White When He Saw the Man Holding His Newborn.
PART 1
The contraction hit so violently that my knees nearly buckled beneath me.
My phone trembled in my hand as I listened to Luca’s voice turn colder than the hospital floor under my shoes.
“Handle it yourself, Jessi.
Stop being so dramatic.”
Then he hung up.
For several seconds, I just stared at the dark screen, struggling to understand how the man who had promised to hold my hand through childbirth had abandoned me when I needed him most.
Another contraction tore through my body, and a nurse hurried toward me with a wheelchair.
“Is someone coming?” she asked gently.
My eyes dropped to the silent phone in my hand.
“Not my husband.”
At thirty-eight weeks pregnant, I sat alone at the maternity entrance with one hand pressed against my stomach while warm fluid soaked through my dress.
For months, Luca had sworn he’d be beside me, but his mother, Wendy, had decided her sixtieth birthday dinner was a “once-in-a-lifetime family event.”
Apparently, the birth of our son wasn’t.
I called Luca again, desperate enough to give him one final chance.
Music, laughter, and clinking glasses filled the background when he answered.
“Luca, my water broke,” I said through another wave of pain.
“The contractions are four minutes apart.”
