PART 1 — THE ROAD

“Get out.

Starting today, you are no longer my responsibility.”

For several seconds, Noah just stared at her, unable to believe Vanessa meant it.

Only an hour earlier, the ten-year-old had watched his father’s coffin disappear into the ground at a cemetery outside San Antonio, Texas.

He was still wearing the white funeral shirt that had become wrinkled in the afternoon heat.

Inside his backpack were a notebook, an empty water bottle, and the last note his father, Michael, had slipped into his pocket before dying.

Daniel. If anything happens, call him. He’ll help you. I’m sorry, son.

Below those words was a single phone number.

Noah had never heard of anyone named Daniel.

His mother had died when he was five.

Two years later, Michael met Vanessa.

She was elegant, confident, and always perfectly dressed.

They married quickly.

Vanessa was never openly cruel to Noah in front of his father, but she was never warm either.

She bought him clothes.

Asked about school.

Smiled whenever Michael was nearby.

The moment his father left the room, though, Noah felt as if he stopped being a child and became part of the furniture.
