PART 1 — THE NOTE ON HER PHONE

“This is my son’s house!

You don’t belong here!”

My mother screamed those words while gripping my pregnant wife by the hair.

Evelyn was on the floor.

Seven months pregnant.

One arm was wrapped protectively around her stomach while the other tried to push herself away from Nora.

I had left work almost three hours early that Wednesday.

I was carrying a small shopping bag with a pink blanket inside.

I had bought it for our baby girl.

For weeks, Evelyn had seemed withdrawn.

Too quiet.

She smiled less.

Ate less.

Sometimes I would come home and find her sitting alone in the bedroom staring at nothing.

Like an idiot, I convinced myself it was pregnancy.

Hormones.

Exhaustion.

Stress about becoming a mother.
