PART 1 — FIFTEEN MINUTES HOME

I had not even been home fifteen minutes.

My suitcase was still beside the front door.

My jacket lay untouched across the arm of the sofa.

I had spent four days in Chicago for work and had taken an earlier flight home because, for once, every meeting ended ahead of schedule.

Normally, Lily would have heard my key in the front lock and come racing down the hallway before I could set my bag down.

She was eight.

She still believed returning from a four-day business trip deserved the same celebration as returning from a year at sea.

That evening?

Nothing.

No little footsteps.

No:

“Dad!”

No hug around my waist.

No questions about whether I brought hotel shampoo home because, for reasons I never understood, Lily collected the tiny bottles.

Just silence.

I looked toward the hallway.

“Lily?”

No answer.
