My 101-Year-Old Grandmother Hadn’t Left Bed in Two Years—Then She Came to My Daughter’s Birthday With a Locked Red Suitcase and Said, “Take Off Her Left Sock”
PART 1 — THE RED SUITCASE
My grandmother Margaret was 101 years old and had barely left her bed in almost two years.
So when she called on the morning of my daughter’s first birthday and said:
“I’m coming.”
I thought I had misheard her.
“Grandma, you can barely sit up for an hour.”
“I said I’m coming.”
“You haven’t left the care center except for medical appointments.”
“I know.”
“Emma’s party is going to be loud.”
“I have survived a century of loud people.”
That sounded enough like her that I almost laughed.
Then her voice softened.
“Maya, I need to be there today.”
Something about the way she said it stopped me from arguing.
Three hours later, a medical transport van pulled into our driveway.
Two attendants helped Grandma into a wheelchair.
She wore a pale blue cardigan, black trousers, orthopedic shoes, and the pearl earrings my grandfather had given her nearly sixty years earlier.
Strapped securely behind her wheelchair was a small red suitcase.
