PART 1 — 1:47 A.M.

“Mommy, it hurts!

Don’t let Grandma touch me!”

My three-year-old daughter’s scream woke me at exactly 1:47 in the morning.

Chloe was curled tightly in her little bed beside ours, both hands pressed protectively against her upper back.

Her whole body trembled.

“Sweetheart?”

I stumbled toward her.

“What hurts?”

She tried reaching for me.

The moment my hand brushed the back of her pajama shirt, she screamed again.

A sound no mother forgets.

Behind me, my husband opened his eyes.

Christopher looked at the clock.

Then at Chloe.

Then sighed.

“Cassandra, please quiet her down.”

I stared.

“She’s in pain.”
