At seventy-three, I never expected to become a bride again.

Truthfully, I had never expected to become a bride at all.

Thomas was my first love.

We were seventeen when we promised each other the kinds of things only seventeen-year-olds can promise with complete sincerity.

Always.

Nothing will change us.

Then college changed us before either of us had the chance to understand what adulthood meant.

I had earned a scholarship in another city.

Thomas wanted to stay in our hometown and work with his father.

His family owned a hardware and building-supply business that had been operating for generations.

He loved that place.

I wanted something else.

Nursing school.

A bigger city.

A life that did not look exactly like the one I had grown up watching.

The morning I left, Thomas came to the bus station.

He stood beneath the departure board with his hands shoved into his jacket pockets.
