On My Wedding Night, My Father-in-Law Walked Into Our Bedroom With a Pillow—Then I Learned My Husband Had Helped Him Plan It
PART 1 — THE MAN WITH THE PILLOW
On my wedding night, my father-in-law walked into our bedroom carrying a pillow under one arm.
“Move over,” he said.
“I’m sleeping in the middle.”
For a few seconds, I thought I had misunderstood him.
Our wedding had ended less than an hour earlier.
Savannah in June.
White hydrangeas.
String lights across the courtyard.
Live music beneath oak trees.
Too many photographs.
Too much champagne.
My cheeks hurt from smiling.
By the time Daniel and I reached the bridal suite on the second floor of the historic inn where our reception had been held, all I wanted was to take out the pins holding my hair together, step out of my wedding dress, and finally be alone with my husband.
I locked the door behind us.
Or thought I did.
“Finally.”
I kicked off my shoes.
Daniel smiled.
