My Son Sold My Wheelchair to Pay for His Cancún Vacation—Six Days Later, He Returned Home and Discovered His Key No Longer Worked
PART 1 — THE EMPTY SPACE BESIDE HER BED
Daniel rolled Evelyn’s wheelchair through the bedroom doorway with a folded blanket lying across its seat.
He had already removed the footrests and was holding the handles as though he had somewhere important to be.
“Where are you taking my chair?” Evelyn asked.
“Just downstairs, Mom.
I need to move it out of the way.”
“Out of whose way?”
Daniel glanced at his phone.
He had been doing that all morning, checking it whenever she asked a question he didn’t want to answer.
“I told you, I’m handling it.”
Evelyn watched him turn the chair toward the hall.
The left wheel brushed the doorframe, leaving a small mark on the white paint.
“Daniel, bring it back here.”
He stopped but did not turn around.
“There’s somebody coming to look at it.
I already told him what condition it’s in.”
Evelyn gripped the edge of the mattress.
“Look at what?”
“The chair.”
