A few hours later, an envelope arrived at the hospital. Inside were bank statements exposing a secret my husband had managed to keep from me for years…

PART 1

“What are you doing here?” Brenda yelled in the middle of the hospital hallway. Her face had gone pale, her hair was a mess, and her blouse was hastily buttoned incorrectly.

People turned in our direction. Two nurses stopped what they were doing and stared at us. I kept my voice calm and even.
“Lower your voice. This is a hospital.”

Brenda, my husband’s secretary, usually arrived at the office looking flawless, with immaculate heels, perfectly applied makeup, and a bright, artificial smile. That morning, she looked like an entirely different person. It was no coincidence that I was standing directly outside the room where her husband, Andrew, was being treated.

Everything had begun three days earlier with something that seemed almost absurdly trivial.

Mark, my husband of twenty-eight years, told me he would spend Saturday showing several prime parcels of land to investors traveling from Chicago. He returned home before lunchtime, looking pale and unusually anxious.

“I have a terrible migraine,” he mumbled. “I canceled everything.”

He shut himself inside our bedroom. I headed down to the garage because I remembered leaving one of the car windows open, and the weather forecast had called for rain. As soon as I opened the passenger door, a strong, sweet perfume reached my nose. It was exactly the same scent that lingered in the office elevator whenever Brenda stepped out.

Then I noticed a piece of black lace underwear tucked underneath the seat.

I froze in place. I didn’t cry, and I didn’t rush upstairs to throw it at Mark’s face.

It would have been easy to lose my temper and create a dramatic scene. But our company, Crestview Developments, wasn’t merely “his” company, despite the way he had started describing it over the past few months. We had built the business together from a cramped office with just two rooms in Columbus. My father, Manuel, had invested his entire life savings to help us get started. I took care of the accounts, collections, payroll, contracts, and even scrubbed the floors myself when we couldn’t afford to hire a cleaning crew.

A year earlier, Mark had begun pushing me out of the company one step at a time.

“You’ve done more than enough, Laura,” he would tell me dismissively. “Take a break. I’ll take care of everything from now on.”
Then he brought Brenda into the company. Not long afterward, he moved his mother, Ofelia, into our home, gradually turning the place where I lived into somewhere I was treated like a servant.

I had no intention of giving them an emotional outburst they could later use against me in court.

Using a plastic bag, I picked up the underwear, retrieved Brenda’s home address from the company’s administrative records, and mailed the package directly to her husband. I placed the black lace inside along with a brief note:

Your wife left this in my husband’s car. I thought you should have it back.
I included only the vehicle’s make, model, and license plate number.
That morning, Andrew called me from an unfamiliar number.

“Mrs. Laura? I’m Brenda’s husband. I need to talk to you right away. I’m at the hospital.”

He explained that when he confronted Brenda, the two of them had gotten into a furious argument. As she stormed out of their apartment, he tried to follow her, lost his footing on the stairs, and fractured his ankle. Then he told me something that made me drop everything and drive straight to the hospital.

“I found some documents in her bag, and you need to see them.”

That was how I ended up facing Brenda, who was now standing in front of me, trembling with fury.

“You’re the one who sent that package!” she spat, stepping dangerously close to me. “You pathetic, bitter woman!”

“I only returned something that had been left behind.”

She was about to fire back when the hospital room door suddenly swung open.
Andrew appeared, leaning heavily on his crutches. His face looked exhausted and pale.
“Brenda, are you really going to keep lying?”
Brenda turned completely white…

PART 2

Andrew motioned for me to step inside his hospital room, and he shut the door right in Brenda’s angry face. Then he pulled a thick manila envelope from beneath his pillow and held it out toward me.

“I found this in her purse, and I think your husband is doing a lot more than just cheating on you,” Andrew said softly.

I unsealed the envelope and pulled out the papers inside carefully. On the very first page was our company’s official corporate letterhead, detailing a series of wire transfers that I had never authorized. Over the last six months, more than eighty thousand dollars had vanished completely from our business accounts, and almost all of it had landed directly in Brenda’s personal bank account.
