PART 1

“She’s unconscious again.”

A brief silence followed before another man answered.

“Bring her to me.

And this time, make sure you don’t leave any bruises.”

I recognized my husband’s voice instantly, and a wave of terror swept through me.

I was alone in our bedroom, listening to a secret audio recording from my seven-year-old daughter’s backpack, when I discovered that the man I’d trusted most might be involved in something horrifying.

My name is Melanie, and I live in Southlake, Texas, with my husband Carter and our daughter Harper.

Until recently, I believed we had a loving, ordinary family, with Carter working in corporate finance while I balanced a part-time job with caring for our home.

Like any mother, I worried about Harper getting sick, having accidents, or encountering problems at school.

Never once did I imagine that the greatest danger to her might come from someone within our own family.

Everything began when Carter’s younger brother, Spencer, started picking Harper up from school.

At first, I appreciated his help because my work schedule occasionally made it difficult to collect her myself.

Then one afternoon, Spencer arrived carrying Harper in his arms, explaining that she’d fallen asleep during the drive.

I reached for her, expecting her to wake when she heard my voice, but she barely reacted.

“She had a long day, Melanie.

I thought it would be better to let her rest.”

I carried her upstairs and remained beside her until she finally opened her eyes.

When she woke, she complained that her body ached and asked if she could go back to sleep.
