Forty Percent
“If you won’t move into assisted living, pack your bags and leave my house now,” my son said — certain I had nowhere else to go. I didn’t argue. I calmly folded my clothes, closed my suitcase, and waited.
He had no idea what I was waiting for.
Chapter 1 — The Kitchen Island
“If you refuse to move into assisted living, then pack your things and leave.”
My son said it from the far side of the kitchen island, without raising his voice. Daniel always sounded most like his father when he spoke softly, which somehow made the words cut deeper.
His hands rested beside a glossy brochure of smiling retirees strolling beneath flowering trees — promises of independence, comfort, and a perfect place to begin the next chapter.
Vanessa stood beside him, arms folded across a cream cashmere sweater. A blue pen had already been set neatly on top of the application.
The kitchen smelled of fresh coffee, furniture polish, and the chicken soup simmering on the stove. I’d started it before breakfast because Daniel’s youngest had a cold.
For one strange moment my attention stayed on the soup — the carrots needed another ten minutes, the broth still lacked salt, the burner was turned too high.
Those small details were easier to manage than the truth sitting across from me: Daniel believed I no longer belonged in the home my money had helped build.
“Did you hear me, Mom?”
“Yes.”
“You can’t keep living like this.”
