Chapter 11 — How Many Times

I kept eating in small bites, and I kept waiting for the other thing to come — the part where he told me I had misunderstood, that Nana had meant well, that I was being dramatic.

The adults in my life had been correcting my memory for so long that a silence, to me, was never really a silence.

It was just the pause before the lecture.

So I waited inside it, braced, the way I braced for everything.

When he finally spoke, he asked me how many times Nana had locked the brace on.
