A Doctor Cut the Lock Off My Brace When I Was Ten — and My Father Finally Saw What My Grandmother Had Been Hiding From Him for a Year
He read every page.
Then he turned back to the front and read every page again, slower, his thick finger moving under the lines the way a man reads a thing he is afraid he has misunderstood.
Nowhere in that booklet did it mention a padlock.
Nowhere did it mention a chain.
Nowhere did it say that a child should be made physically unable to take the brace off herself in an emergency.
What it did say — and I watched his finger find the paragraph, near the bottom of a page — was that a parent should regularly check the child’s skin for deep pressure marks, and I knew he had reached that part before he lifted his eyes from the page and looked at the mark below my arm.
