Chapter 3 — The One Time I Walked to the Mailbox
The wandering had happened exactly once.
It was one evening after supper, and I had walked down our long gravel driveway to the mailbox because I had seen from the window that the little red metal flag was still up, and some part of me had wanted, simply, to be the one who brought the mail in.
That was all.
Nana found me before I even reached the post, and the way she said my name across the dark yard told me I had done something much larger than walk fifty yards to a mailbox.
After that evening, the one walk became a permanent fact about me.
