“What’s this key for?” I asked softly, looking at his open hand.

He glanced back over his shoulder at the new deadbolt on our door.

“You live here,” he said.

That was all.

Two words.

I have been given many things since then, in the years between that porch step and now, but I am not sure any of them ever landed with the weight of those two words, because of everything they answered.
