My mother stared at me as though I had struck her.

“You are destroying your own family, Sebastian.” “No,” I said.

“I’m finally finding out who destroyed it six years ago.”

Chapter 11 — I Cannot Participate

Raymond set his briefcase down on a chair, and the color drained entirely out of his face.

“Adelaide,” he said.

“I cannot participate in this any longer.”

That single sentence did what nothing I had said could do: it cracked my mother’s composure, for the first time in my life.
