Signing those papers had not closed my story with the Abernathys at all.

It had unlocked the front door to a secret my father and Alistair had kept buried for three decades — a secret that waited, sealed, in a box in a downtown bank, with my name on the front and thirty years of unknown history behind it.

I do not yet know what the letter says.

I do not yet know why my father and Alistair stood outside an accounting office thirty years ago holding a ledger between them, or what passed between them, or what obligation or truth or gift my whole marriage was quietly meant to carry.

The envelope will be released to me next week.
