I never spoke ill of Luca to them.
I did not narrate his betrayals or catalog his cruelties or use them as a weapon in their hearts.
When they asked hard questions, I answered honestly but without venom, and I let his own conduct, his own steady absence, tell them over time whatever it was going to tell them, without my thumb on the scale.
The supervised visitation and the settlement existed to protect my children’s safety, which is one thing.
But protecting their hearts, their capacity to grow up without a churning hatred at the center of them, was a different and more delicate task, and it was mine alone, and it required me to be larger than my own justified anger.
