She could, at any point in those eleven years, have simply told me the truth.

She could have taken me aside and said: your husband does not own that house, I do, and I do not trust him, and I am watching.

She could have given me the money outright, years earlier, and let me use it to leave.

And I have come to believe she chose not to for a reason that took me a long time to understand and that I now find almost unbearably wise.

If she had told me sooner, I would not have been ready.
